The goal of this course is to give students a full understanding of heterocyclic chemistry. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to define heterocyclic compounds and identify the role of heteroatoms and apply international nomenclature rules for heterocycles, including the Hantzsch–Widman system, replacement (“a-”) nomenclature, and semi-systematic (semi-trivial) nomenclature for mono- and polycyclic heterocyclic systems. Students will then be able to learn and use both traditional and new ways to create heterocyclic compounds, describe how the reactions work, and examine the unique chemical and physical properties of these compounds.
