The objective of the first-year written expression and comprehension course is to enhance students’ overall writing abilities while also deepening their comprehension of English writing styles and functions. The course is comprised of two principal components: written comprehension and written expression. In the first semester, students are instructed in the fundamentals of English grammar, including the classification of parts of speech and an overview of the various types of sentences. In the second semester, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in organizing their thoughts into coherent sentences and paragraphs, with an emphasis on clarity and appropriateness of expression. Additionally, students are guided in the use of correct punctuation and capitalization. Furthermore, the course delves into the nuances of different paragraph types, enabling students to hone their abilities in writing various types of paragraphs, including description, narration, and others. The following sections encapsulate the key concepts covered in three chapters: paragraph organization, mechanics of writing, and types of paragraphs.
