Chemistry 1 is an introductory course in general chemistry that presents the fundamental principles
governing the structure, properties and transformations of matter. The course covers atomic
structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, states of matter. Emphasis is placed on quantitative
problem solving, correct use of chemical symbols and formulas, and the connection between
microscopic (atomic/molecular) models and macroscopic (observable) phenomena. If a laboratory
component is included, experiments are used to illustrate and reinforce the theoretical concepts, as
well as to develop basic practical and data-analysis skills.
