"Contemporary Popular Literature" explores the literary forms, themes, and cultural dynamics of the texts that dominate today’s global reading landscape. It examines how modern popular narratives—shaped by mass media, digital culture, and market demand—reflect contemporary concerns, tastes, and identities. The module introduces students to key concepts such as popular culture, mass production, and the commodification of literature, before tracing the influence of foundational narratives like Greek mythology on today’s storytelling. It also investigates the distinctions between genre fiction and literary fiction, highlighting how each responds to current cultural contexts. By studying major contemporary genres—including romance, science fiction, fantasy, horror, crime fiction, and graphic novels—the module offers students critical tools to analyze how popular literature engages with technological change, globalization, social anxieties, and the evolving expectations of modern readers.
