Abstract
This current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using storytelling in enhancing EFL learners’ motivation toward the EFL language learning and fostering their communicative competence during their oral performance which enables them to face and overcome the different encountered speaking difficulties in the department of English language at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia, Souk-Ahras University. Aiming to test the main hypotheses, this descriptive, correlational, and explanatory research utilized a mixed method as well as adapted a triangulation approach in collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. The researcher opted for four main instruments; a questionnaire was administered to Second-year LMD students at the department of English, Souk-Ahras University, a Non-participant observation was conducted during the second semester (2023) with Second-year students over five (05) sessions during “Oral Expression and Comprehension” subject, a Post-observation questionnaire was addressed to participants of the classroom observation; Second-year LMD students, and an in-depth Semi-structured interview was conducted with five (05) conveniently selected EFL teachers of “Oral Expression and comprehension” course at the department of English, Souk-Ahras University. The gathered data have illustrated that the implementation of storytelling as a pedagogical technique has a positive impacts on Algerian EFL students’ learning engagement. The students had good results at the end of each implementation after having a Lesson-based storytelling in which they were supposed to communicate; tell, retell, and discuss their experienced factual and suggested imaginative stories. Therefore, it developed their motivation during the learning process and proficiently enhanced their oral performance skills. Based on these results, raised hypotheses were confirmed.
