The Thematic Research Agency for Social Sciences and Humanities announces the opening of the call for applications for Thematic Research Projects for the year 2026, based on the thematic areas attached to this announcement.
Research in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities plays a fundamental role in understanding and addressing the major issues facing society. It is called upon to continuously adapt its approaches and methodologies in response to ongoing social transformations and emerging challenges. Areas such as digitalization, psychological and social disorders, cultural heritage and its relationship to development, and social issues including the family, employment, migration, and urbanization have become pressing concerns within Algerian society and require targeted research efforts capable of providing sound scientific expertise and practical solutions.
These thematic research projects constitute a practical framework for addressing a wide range of research challenges. They are open to all research entities (research laboratories, research units, and research centers), as well as to all researchers and national experts, including those residing abroad. The initiative also encourages collaboration with social and economic partners.
The Agency emphasizes that proposed projects should go beyond descriptive studies and adopt analytical and/or comparative approaches, positioning research as a mechanism for proposing evidence-based solutions to the socio-economic challenges facing society at various levels.
Selection Criteria
- Research teams must consist of 3 to 6 researchers, with the project coordinator holding the rank of Professor.
- The project implementation period is set at two (2) years.
Projects will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- The establishment of a multidisciplinary research team and demonstrated expertise of the proposed researchers.
- The relevance of the project to the proposed thematic areas and research issues.
- The clarity and precision of the expected research outputs.
- The contribution and involvement of social partners from the relevant sectors.
- The affiliation of approved projects with recognized research entities.
Funding
- Selected projects may receive funding of up to DZD 2,000,000.00, allocated exclusively to operating expenses. The funding will be disbursed in two installments, with the first installment not exceeding 50% of the total allocation.
- The operating budget will be transferred to the host institutions of the approved project coordinators (host research entities).
- Members of each approved project will receive an annual research allowance in accordance with Article 14 of Executive Decree No. 21-144 of April 17, 2021, which establishes the conditions governing part-time scientific research and technological development activities and the corresponding remuneration.
Application Procedure and Timeline
- Application period: August 1, 2026 – October 1, 2026.
- Evaluation period: October 4, 2026 – November 4, 2026.
- Notification of evaluation results: November 15, 2026.
- Appeal submission period: November 16, 2026 – November 25, 2026.
- Publication of the final list of selected projects: November 30, 2026.
- Signing of project launch agreements: December 1, 2026.
