Abstract
Plant products essential oils and extracts have been used for many times in traditional
medicine, natural therapy and food preservation. The search of new natural products as
natural antioxidant and antibacterial agents was the object of this study.
The present study was conducted to examine the chemical composition, in vitro antioxidant
and antibacterial activity of both the essential oil and methanol extract of Satureja calamintha
nepeta collected from tow localities in the northeast of Algeria: Annaba (SA) and Jijel (SJ).
Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis of the essential oils obtained by
steam distillation identified about 20 (98, 83% of the total oil) and 34 (99.40 % of the total
oil) constituents from SA and SJ respectively. GC–MS analysis revealed that the major
constituents of the SA and SJ were Piperitone oxide (54.71 and 22.26%), cyclohexanone, 2-(1-
methylethylidene) (20.32 and 9.37%), and Menthone (5.97 and 26.46%), respectively, and
pulegone 14.04 for SJ.
Methanol extracts were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus. Total phenolic content was found to
be 482.666±2.516μg/mg of dry extract for SA and 264.666±0.577μg/mg of dry extract for SJ.
Antioxidant activity of the EO and MeOH extract was evaluated by DPPH test. Results
indicate that the effect of the essential oils was very low and less effective than methanol
extracts.
The evaluation of the antibacterial activity was assessed by disc diffusion and microdilution
methods. No, or slight, activity was observed when the extracts were tested against bacterial
strains, whereas essential oils exhibited strong antibacterial activity.
Antifungal activity of the essential oils against phytopathogens fungi was evaluated by
poisoned food technique, the results were very important especially for SJ.
The results indicate that the oils have the capacity to inhibit the growth of pathogenic
microorganisms; on the other hand methanol extracts showed antioxidant activity.
