Abstract

This study on the ecology of the Northern Shoveller (Anas clypeata) was carried out
two wintering seasons (2013/2014 and 2014/2015) at the main wetlands that are part of
Guerbes-Sanhadja Complex (City of Skikda).
The maximum number of this dubbling duck was recorded at Gareat Hadj-Tahar, with
1523 birds observed during the month of December 2014. Its numbers are distributed into
small groups in areas devoid of any vegetation in the middle of the body of water of the
wetland.
The study of the rate of daily activities showed that sleep is the dominant activity
(49%).It is followed by the activity of swimming (32%), food (10%), grooming (5%) and
finally flight (4%).These last two activities are performed at the beginning and end of the
wintering season. This study indicates that the Gareat Hadj-Tahar plays a role in the diurnal
roost for this species.
