Abstract
In order to assess the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in the El Tarf region, far East of Algeria, and their impact on milk production, a study was carried out on 58 Holstein dairy cows aged 3 to 10 years, divided into 2 farms with 41 and 17 cows and on 164 and 65 samples of milk taken respectively.
The results of the California Mastitis Test (CMT) revealed on 229 quarters a positivity percentage of 61.6% of the samples (65.2% and 53.8% in the first and second farms), increasing with stage (early 38,7%, medium 62,8, late 78,5%) and lactation number (first 48,5%, second 51,4%, third 66,0%, fourth 73,0%), for 61,6% of positive cows. Moreover, the milk controls carried out on cows of the same number and lactation stage showed a drop in milk production of about 9,7% on average between positive cows and negative cows. The treatment of quarters with subclinical mastitis should limit the clinical mastitis and their consequences
