Abstract

The examination of 3627 Teleostean fishes belonging to 30 species of the Eastern Algerian coast, enabled us to find 945 specimens infested by 3607 parasitic Copepoda belonging to 33 species. Among the counted Copepoda, only 5 could not be completely identified. Twelve species of parasites are new for the Algerian fauna. Among the parasitic Copepod species found, 25 are oixenous, 4 species are stenoxenous, and 5 species infect more than two fish species. Analysis of the biodiversity, according to the ecological and biological characteristics of the whole host species, shows that the benthic, migrating, gregarious, and omnivorous fishes are parasitized by a great number of species; the differences between the average specific richness (MSR) are statistically significant according to the Kruskal Walis test. Moreover, the calculation of epidemiologic indices shows that the species C. sargi; H. pagellibogneravei and P. mediterranea show the largest values.
