A morphometric study of goats in Northeastern Algeria was carried out on 472 adult animals (358 females and 114 males) of local breeds distributed over 4 wilayas (Souk Ahras, El Tarf, Jijel and Guelma). 17 body measurements were used and 11 zootechnical indices were calculated with quantitative and qualitative characteristics in order to establish an ethnic and functional classification of this population. These goats are mainly small but not dwarf (height at withers 67.1 ± 5.5 cm), light (live weight 31.0 ± 12.2 kg), elongated, square-shaped, often horned (83.4%), with drooping ears (76.9%), straight-headed (69.4%) and with various dresses mostly black (30.7%) or black-and-white (26.9%) and quite heterogeneous. These characteristics relate them mainly to the Kabyle and Arabia breeds, with other crosses. Significant differences (p <0.05) in some body measurements were found between regions of study and between the sexes. The main component analysis of body measurements revealed two main components that make up 36.5% and 18.7% of total inertia. It allowed to establish 5 classes (n = 384, 78, 6, 3 and 1). These differences should be taken into account in the conservation program of the goat population in Algeria which is very marginalized.
