Abstract

Given their location between the two great Algerian wetlands complexes of El
Kala and the high plateaus of Constantine, the wetlands of the province of Souk-Ahras
are very important sites for migratory birds. Counts of waterbirds carried out during two
consecutive years (2011/2012 and 2012/2013) at three wetlands sites in this region show
that it harbours about 17 families of wintering and/or migrating birds, represented by 54
species. These families are mainly dominated by the Anatidae, with thirteen species, and
the Scolopacidae, with nine species.
Of the 54 observed species, 15 were noted to be breeding. The Tiffech site is
the largest and most diversified wetland in the region, owing to the number of recordedindividuals,
and its richness in species (47) of waterbirds. Many species found in these
environments have a protected conservation status at both the national and international
levels. Such is the case, for example, for the White-headed duck, the Ferruginous duck,
of the Eurasian spoonbill, or of the Greater Flamingo. This underlines the importance of
these wetlands, which are used by these bird populations as places of wintering or nesting,
as well as for migratory stop-overs.
