Abstract

This study on barymetric variability in five Algerian sheep breeds distributed in seven regions used 19 body measurements (TBL, SIL, WH, BH, RH, HG, CD, SW, RW, TW, IW, PL, HW, HL, EW, EL, CP and CH) of 430 animals, 356 females (F) and 74 males (M): Ouled-Djellal (129F, 31M), Hamra (50F, 6M), Rembi (49F, 16M), Berbere (83F, 17M) and Barbarine (45F, 4M). Highly significant differences were observed between breeds (p<0.001). A principal component analysis on 356 females revealing two major components that makes up 70.6% and 9% of the total inertia. It showed 4 classes; one class consists of 281 females of all breeds (63 females Ouled Djellal, 83 Berbere, 50 Hamra, 49 Rembi and 36 Barbarine) which present the average measurements of the population. The cluster analysis showed 3 groups, it defined a similar body measurements between Berbere and Barbarine (1st group), and between Rembi and Hamra breeds (2nd group). Ouled Djellal breed was the best conformed (p<0.001) (3 rd group). The results of quantitative traits showed significantly higher values for Ouled Djellal breed, which is so bigger than the others.
