Abstract
Processes using adsorption are usually considered as a complementary technique to a conventional purification water process in particular to remove dissolved organic substances.
The aim of work is to study the adsorption of five organic acids pollutants such as acetic,
citric, formic, propanoic and benzoic acid by activated coal and kaolin in its natural state,
activated one and intercalated in aqueous solutions.
Then, the study was directed to evaluate the influence of reaction parameters such as
adsorbent mass, contact time and bath temperature on the removal efficiency of acids by
both adsorbent. The kinetic data show that the activated and intercalated Kaolin adsorbed
better the organic pollutants than the activated coal. Indeed, the obtained results showed
that the intercalation of the clay by polyaniline, synthesized in laboratory, improve the
texture of the material porous, which allows its use in the adsorption of organic components.
Finally, the adsorption isotherms of organic acids obtained on both adsorbent are described
satisfactorily by the Langmuir model.
Key Words: activated Coal, Clay and Kaolin, adsorption and isotherm.
