Abstract
The selection of breeders is a key moment in the management of reproduction and the improvement of a breed, due to their role in the diffusion of phenotypic characteristics, performance and certain sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, our study concerns the contribution to the implementation of a more elaborate program in breeding choices in Algeria, and comprises several components
The first concerns the prior knowledge of the history of these breeders, conducted by a retrospective survey over a period of 11 years (2003-2013). Stallions belonging to the National Stud of Tiaret are considered fertile since their fertility per cycle is greater than the theoretical percentage of 50% (estimated at 96% for Arab stallions and 94% for stallions of all breeds). Apparent fertility is 85% and 81% respectively for the Arab race and the Barb race.
Other investigations have been carried out to assess fertility. They concern the standard: the determination of the live weight by the reading of the body measurements and the use of different barymetric formulas; reproductive parameters are the evolution of testicular criteria by their measurements ((TSW, WTL, WTR, TLL, TLR, THL, THR), endocrine parameters (testosterone, FSH and LH), as well as the parameters for assessing sexual behaviour.
The scrotal width (Ls) was significantly correlated with body weight, age, and all testicular parameters (p <0.01); the endocrine parameters analyzed by the serum testosterone and LH (ICSH) and FSH, the scrotal width (Ls) is positively correlated with testosterone. Finally the spermogram showed that there is a significant correlation between the number of jump with motility, and sperm production output (DSO) (r=0,99 , p< 0,01).
The sexual behavior is appreciated by the notation of the libido and the different times (Time spent at the erection, time spent in ejaculation, number of jumps). The mean value of libido score showed a significant difference (P <0.05) for Arab and Barb, the same for sniffing (p <0.001) and the frequency flehmen (P <0.05); the Barb stallion showed the best score.
Gynecological, ultrasound and endocrine examinations (estrogens, progesterone and FSH) were used in mares to determine their physiological status (ovulation, emptiness or pregnancy). The mean progesterone rate is (0.38 ± 0.19) ng/ml and (12.04 ± 7.65) ng/ml, respectively, in empty and in pregnant mares.
