ABSTRACT
The objective of this work is to study the possibility of using a waste, namely the eggshell and eggshell membrane as a bio-adsorbents for the recovery of organic compounds (dyes) harmful to man and to environment due to the properties of toxicity, carcinogenicity and poor biodegradation. The eggshell from a local restaurant in the eastern region of Algeria is characterized by different analysis techniques; X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, infrared spectroscopy, specific surfaces, thermal analysis (TGA) and zero load point results were performed.
In static mode, various parameters, such as contact time, stirring speed, temperature, pH best result was achieved at T = 25 ° C and the adsorption is exothermic. The influence of pH and the rate of stirring showed that the percentage of discoloration of Basic Fuchsin (BF) and Rhodamine B (RhB) increases with increasing pH and rate of stirring. The absorption isotherm on the membrane obeys the Freundlich model therefore the Langmuir model is better and concentration has been studied. The study of the influence of temperature showed that the suited for the shell with and without membrane (ESM+ES and ES). The adsorption study has allowed us to show that the elimination of BF and RhB dye by eggshell membranes (ESM) is better than that of shells with membranes and shells without membranes.
A series of experiments in dynamic mode was studied by varying the height of the bed (15-35 mm), the flow rate (2-4 mL/min), the initial concentration of the dye (5-15mg/L), the pH of medium (4-8), ionic strength (0.01-0.1N) and temperature (25-45°C). The experimental results showed that the adsorbed amount of Basic Fuchsin increases with increasing flow rate, unlike the case of Rhodamine B. As well as the adsorption capacity increases with increasing bed height and pH, therefore it decreases with increasing temperature. The decrease in adsorption of the FB and RhB dye by increasing the salt concentration, would probably be related to a competitive adsorption between the cations of the NaCl salt and the ions of the two cationic dyes. Regeneration tests have shown that these adsorbents can be used for several tests. Several kinetic models were applied in this study: Bohart-Adams, Dose response, Yoon-Nelson, and Thomas, to give a mathematical and statistical aspect to the experimental results.
