Abstract
-
In civil engineering, the durability of reinforced concrete infrastructure is mainly attributed to the corrosion of reinforcements before or after their concrete coating. Where their protection constitute an economic, environmental and security challenge. To this end, corrosion inhibitors can be added to the concrete formulation and / or the reinforcements can be coated with a protective coating. This study focused both, on the study of behavior of E24 steel against corrosion in alkaline medium in the presence of chlorides and on the other hand, on the study of the protection of concrete reinforcement.
Electrochemical effectiveness of cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized from cerium nitrate in the presence of citric acid for (INBHC) and in the presence of acetic acid again (INBHA) against corrosion of concrete reinforcement was evaluated by using electrochemical methods and surface analyzes. It has been found from the electrochemical results that both inhibitors act effectively as anodic inhibitors and offers high protection even at low added concentrations. White light interferometry analysis shows the increase of the thickness of the deposited film when ceria nanoparticles were added to the aggressive medium which seems to be due to the ceria nanoparticles action namely through the stabilization of the iron oxide protective layer and also through the precipitation of a few cerium oxide soluble compounds which act by blocking the active anodic sites. Thus, both actions can improve the resistance of steel to localized corrosion. The INBHA addition to the aggressive medium seems to allow to thicker deposited films than those obtained with INBHC addition. Thermodynamic parameters evaluated at different bath temperatures showed that the film is deposited on the surface of the substrate by physical adsorption process.
Ceria based coatings can also offer a high protection of the concrete reinforcement against corrosion exposed to open in air during storage or by chlorides after coating. Electrochemical and analytical results show that the coating prepared from cerium nitrate with a few added acetic acid amounts at solution pH 8 offered better long-term resistance when the coated samples are exposed to open air or when are immersed in saline aggressive solution (NaCl solution). The use of cerium oxides either as inhibitor or as electrodeposited coating is promoters in the civil engineering field.
