Abstract
In agriculture, fertilizers are used to improve agricultural yield. But their excessive use has led to massive pollution of soil, air and water and affected human health. This study was designed to evaluate the toxicity of two fertilizers largely used in agriculture, onenitrogenous phosphate (Monoammonium phosphate, MAP) and the other nitrogenous (Calcium nitrate), and to conduct a comparative study of the toxic effects on hematological, biochemical parameters and histological changes in male white rats of the Wistar strain. 49 adult male rats were divided into 7 groups with 7 rats each. The control group (G1) received water, the groups G2, G3, G4 were treated by gavage with MAP at doses (200, 400, 800mg/kg of body weight) respectively and the groups G5, G6, G7 were treated by gavage with calcium nitrate at doses (200, 400, 800 mg/kg of body weight) respectively for 30 days. The results obtained showed that the treatment with MAP under the experimental conditions used induced a significant decrease in body weight in the group treated at the high dose, while the administration of calcium nitrate led to an increase in body weight of the G7 group compared to the control group. The study of the mass of the organs indicated an increase in liver and kidney mass in the groups treated with two fertilizers. A disturbance of hematological parameters was always noted in the groups treated with high doses (400 and 800mg/kg), accompanied by a modification of biochemical parameters: total proteins, albumin, transaminases (ASAT, ALAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin, glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, urea, creatinine and uric acid. Furthermore, the enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers determined in the rats treated withMAP and calcium nitrate revealed an induction of the detoxification system, expressed by a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) associated with a decrease in glutathione (GSH), a significant decrease in the activity of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione s-transferase (GSH-ST), at the level of the organs studied (liver and kidneys). Histopathologically, optical microscopy revealed hepatic and renal tissue damage in the different treated groups compared to the control group.
