Abstract

Abstract
The production of naked barley inSouk Ahras region, like other grain cropping regionsin Algeria, was affected by drought stress. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance and adaptation of naked barley (Chaïr ennebi) compared to the covered barley genotypes. We conducted the following experiments: A first experiment was conducted under rain-fed conditions inSouk Ahras area(Merahna and Tiffech), in the 2018 and 2019 cropping seasons. The experiment was organized in a randomized complete block design with four replications. A second experiment was conducted in the greenhouse to study the effects of water stress on the barley varieties studied and to compare genotypes of drought tolerance by measuring certain physiological, morphological, and biochemical traits under different conditions of water stress.
The field results of this study showed a non-significant effect of the genotype x environmental interaction on the main morphological and agronomic traits. Tiffech region has enabled almost all genotypes to express their performance by placing them in more conditions that are suitable. The majority of hulled barley genotypes showed better yield performance, unlike naked barely. Although its output stability is high, its productive performance is low among the studied genotypes. Furthermore, the results indicate that the high yield comes from achieving a high number of spikes per m2, the weight of one thousand grains, grain width, grain thickness, spike neck length, and leaf area. On the other hand, the descriptive sheets proposed by UPOV (2018) have led to the existence of interesting intra- and interspecific variability within the plant material. The results from the second experiment showed that barley varieties vary in response to water stress, suggesting different strategies for adaptation to water stress among the genotypes. Among them is the significant accumulation of osmoprotectants, such as proline, especially in naked barley. Independently to both sites studied, the hulled barley genotypes, \"Saida\" and \"El Fouara\" were the most drought-tolerant and had the best yield performance.
