Abstract

The present study was undertaken to assess the toxicological effects of two commonly used pesticides in Algeria, namely Sekator (herbicide product) and Prasaro 250 EC (fungicide product) belonged respectively, to sulfonylurea and triazole families. Herein, Forty-two male rabbits were equally divided into the control group (Control) received distilled water and basal diet, three groups received orally three different doses of Sekator (0.213 (G1); 0.426 (G2), and 1.066mg/kg body weight (G3)), and three groups treated orally with Prosaro 250 EC with three doses; 0.093 (G4); 0.186(G5), and 0.465 mg/kg body weight (G6) for 21 consecutive days. The median lethal dose (DL50) of both test pesticides was preliminarily determined, as well as the biochemical, hematological, antioxidant parameters, and renal and hepatic histopathological study were evaluated in control and pesticides treated animals. As a result, body weight gain decreased significantly in Sekator, but it increased significantly in Prosaro 250 EC treated animals as compared with the control group. In addition, the absolute liver weight significantly increased, since kidney absolute weight decreased significantly in treated animals compared with controls. Pesticide treatment induced marked alterations in hematological profiles, and biochemical parameters including serum concentrations of glycemia, uric acid, urea, creatinine, cholesterol, triglyceride, total proteins, and transaminases (ASAT, ALAT). Moreover, Sekator and Prosaro 250 EC treatment induced a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) level, along with a significant decrease in the enzymatic activity of glutathione s-transferase (GSH-ST) and catalase (CAT), and the level of glutathione (GSH) in liver and kidney tissues. All these alterations in the mentioned parameters are supported by the hepatic and renal histopathological observations.
