Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of adopting the genre-based approach GBA in teaching technical writing for ESP learners, specifically Master 1 Electrical Engineering students at Mouhamed Cherif Messaadia University. The problematic addressed in this study is the need to improve students\' writing competencies in the technical field as traditional instructional methods may not be effectively equipping students with the necessary writing skills that address their needs. In response to the aforementioned need, this research examines the potential of the GBA as an alternative instructional method, which is designed to develop students\' writing skills by providing them with a clear understanding of genre conventions and expectations. To assess the impact of the GBA intervention, pre-test and post-test instruments were utilized to measure students\' writing performance. The results revealed empirical evidences that adopting the GBA significantly enhances target students technical writing competencies. This confirms the main hypothesis of the study concerning the efficacy of the GBA as a pedagogical approach for teaching technical writing to the target population. This validation contributes to the growing body of research supporting the effectiveness of the GBA in ESP contexts, where the focus is on addressing students writing weaknesses. Moreover, further research is recommended to explore other aspects of the GBA and its potential to improve different aspects of technical writing, such as grammar skills.
