Abstract

Algeria\'s security partnership with NATO had two periods: the first one was characterized by the influence of the alliance past (NATO supporting the colonial power), which had an impact on Algerian foreign policy towards the alliance in the post-independence period; the second one was marked by a rapprochement, among which the Algerian image at the international level was reconsidered; this change is due to the change in the political identity of Algeria as a leader in fighting against terrorism in the Mediterranean and Africa (role identity). The extent of stability and change, both in Algerian political identity and also in common values at the level of the international system, determines the future of this relationship. Understanding the variables as well as the reasons for the change in Algerian security policy enables us to know the nature and importance of the security partnership between Algeria and NATO and its horizons.
