Abstract:
The overall aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of a recreational sports programme accompanied by an indicative nutritional education programme on certain indicators of body structure and also aimed to modify the dietary habits of a sample of adolescents aged 15-18 years, from the Tamluka district, Guelma State. In addition, the study aims to investigate the effectiveness and impact of practising a variety of physical and sporting activities while following good nutritional behaviour on overweight and obese adolescents.
From a theoretical point of view, the researcher discussed the concept of physical activity, sports physical activity, its types and characteristics, the pyramid of physical activity, its importance for individual health, sports leisure activities, their importance and objectives. He also discussed obesity and weight gain and their causes, such as lack of daily physical activity and increased energy intake resulting from poor eating habits, and how to combat and prevent them by increasing the individual\'s level of physical activity and sport while adopting good and correct nutritional behaviour. The researcher also discussed the concept of nutritional education and how it affects individual behaviour and eating habits.
The researcher obtained the following results:
The research sample comprised 16 overweight and obese adolescent males from the Tamluka district of Guelma state, aged between 15 and 18. They were purposely selected on the basis of body mass index (BMI) and classified according to IOTF standards. The researcher used an experimental approach with a single sample design. Using the pre- and post-measurement method for the sample, she relied on the MARTIN2000 questionnaire to measure physical activity levels, the Dutch diet questionnaire DEBQ and the three-factor diet questionnaire TFEQ to identify and determine consumption behaviours. With regard to the indicators used in the study, the researchers chose to measure the body components of percentage fat PL and percentage muscle PM using a device: (OMRON body composition monitor Model -HBF-214). Body measurements: Body mass index (BMI) was used and circumferences were measured for abdominal circumference (TT) and waist circumference (TH).
- There was a significant improvement in the post-test classification of the sample members. Among the sample population we recorded 10 individuals falling into the obese category, i.e. 62%, and 6 individuals falling into the overweight category, i.e. 37.5%, and we recorded 25.8 as the minimum value and 34.4 as the highest value for BMI. After implementing the programme, the results improved. Two people fell into the obese category, i.e. 12.5%, and 13 people fell into the overweight category, i.e. 81.5%. One case was recorded in the normal weight category, represented by 6.25%, and 23.86 as the minimum and 32.2 as the maximum value for the BMI of the study sample. The results of the study were improved. The TT body circumference was measured at 84 cm for the minimum value and 110 cm for the highest value. At the subsequent measurement, we were able to record 78 cm as the minimum value and 100 cm as the maximum value for the sample. For the TH waist circumference, we recorded 93 cm as the minimum value and 111 cm as the maximum. . After applying the programme, the minimum value reached 88 cm and 103 cm, the highest value and the highest percentage of waist circumference (TH) for the study sample. In addition, there was an improvement in the percentage of PL fat for the members of the sample, from 23.2% as the minimum value and 34.4% as the highest value to 20.3% as the minimum value and 30% as the highest value for the percentage of PL fat for the sample. With regard to muscle percentage, the minimum value of 26.3% and the maximum value of 37.6% were recorded before the measurement for PM muscle percentage, while the minimum value of 29.3% and the maximum value of 38.7% were recorded after the measurement for the study sample. The researcher also noted an improvement in the eating habits of the sample members.
The individuals in the sample did not answer the question on emotional eating, i.e. 93.75%, and 14 individuals did not answer the question on eating outside working hours, i.e. 87.5% of the total population in the study sample. With regard to the results of the post-measurement of the TFEQ questionnaire, we concluded that 08 individuals had an average score, i.e. 50%, and 06 individuals a high score, i.e. 37.5%, on the dimension of cognitive restraint with regard to food consumption. Regarding the dimension of self-inhibition towards seating, we obtained the following results: 09 individuals have a low degree of self-inhibition towards seating, represented by 56.25%, 06 individuals have a medium score, represented by 37.5%. With regard to the hunger sensation dimension, we recorded 11 individuals with a low degree of response to the sensation of hunger, i.e. 68.75%, and 04 individuals with an average score, i.e. 25%.
- The recreational sports programme and the nutritional support programme had a positive effect on body mass index (BMI), body circumference (TT), waist circumference (TH), percentage of fat (PL) and percentage of muscle (PM).
- The nutritional support programme had a positive impact on the eating habits of the sample members.
- The recreational sports programme has a positive impact on the activity levels of the sample members.
- There is an inverse relationship between measures of physical activity and the five body indicators (body mass index (BMI), body circumference (WC), waist circumference (WC), percentage of muscle (PM) and percentage of fat (PL)).
The researcher made a number of suggestions:
Pay attention to the nutritional behaviours and habits that the individual adopts in the course of his or her daily life.
Identify risk factors that pose a threat to health, such as physical inactivity.
Prepare a holistic study to determine the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in societies, particularly among adolescents.
Prepare a national strategy adapted to Algerian society to link physical activity and nutritional behaviour.
