Abstract
Grammatical interference often poses challenges for EFL learners when translating from their native language to English. This research investigates the effect of grammatical interference on the translation proficiency of third-year LMD students at the Department of English, Mohammed Cherif Messadia University, Souk-Ahras, when translating from Arabic to English. The study aims to test two hypotheses. Firstly, grammatical interference can have a negative effect on students\' translation, leading to an increased occurrence of errors. Secondly, grammatical interference can indeed be a significant factor contributing to errors in translation, in addition to the lack of comprehension of the grammar of the target language. To test these hypotheses, three distinct instruments are used: a student questionnaire, a translation test, and a teacher\'s questionnaire. The student questionnaire aims to explore students\' perspectives on the impact of grammatical interference in translation. The translation test is administered to analyze errors committed by students due to grammatical interference. Furthermore, the teacher\'s questionnaire is distributed to ten teachers from various cities (Souk Ahras, Annaba, Guelma, and Mascara) to gather their professional opinions and insights regarding the effect of grammatical interference on translation. The research results confirm that grammatical interference indeed hurts students\' translation, leading to an increased occurrence of errors. Moreover, the results prove that grammatical interference can indeed be a significant factor contributing to errors in translation, in addition to the lack of comprehension of the grammar of the target language.
