Abstract

Abstract

This dissertation investigates one of the major problematic subjects in the field of English language teaching and learning. It mainly aims to investigate the effectiveness of using authentic materials in EFL instructions at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia University in order to explore their effects on learners’ language proficiency, engagement and cultural and contextual understanding of the language. The current study hypothesizes that if teachers use authentic materials in teaching English language, they will enhance learners’ language proficiency and engagement in classroom and they will positively influence learners\' cultural and contextual understanding. The present thesis consists of two main parts; the theoretical consideration of the research study which includes two chapters where we present an overview of the authentic materials in teaching and learning in the first chapter, while the second chapter explores the effectiveness using of authentic materials in EFL classroom instructions. The second part is devoted to the practical framework of the study. In this part, we put the theory into practice in a form of fieldwork. In an attempt to explore these facts, a descriptive research method was undertaken and data were collected through triangulation method, which includes a questionnaire administered to 65 Freshmen learners; interviews conducted with four teachers of oral expression and comprehension module from the same university, and classroom observations. The research study findings indicated a positive response and significant interest from all participants. The results revealed learners\' satisfaction with their experience of learning through authentic materials, as they demonstrated that such materials are an effective technique for enhancing their language proficiency and motivation. The results from teachers’ interview indicated that authentic materials help learners to enhance and improve their speaking and listening skills as well as enrich their vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, and speaking fluency by exposing them to
genuine speech patterns and effective communication skills as well as they boost learners\' motivation and engagement.
