Abstract
Abstract
English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is a global educational phenomenon that is quickly expanding throughout educational systems worldwide and has become one of the most significant trends in Higher Education. In non-English speaking nations, there appears to be a rapid movement towards EMI for academic topics such as science, mathematics, geography, and medicine. The present study is based on exploring the effectiveness of in-service teachers training in enhancing teachers’ performance to use EMI at Mohamed Cherif Messaadia (MCM) Souk Ahras University. To achieve this aim, the study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data from officials and teachers. A random sampling technique was used to select teachers who have received the in-service teachers training on EMI to answer the online questionnaire; whereas, a purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of the officials sample. The data were gathered two instruments: “interview” and “questionnaire”. An online questionnaire was administered to two hundred (200) teachers at MCM University. However, the interviews were conducted with six (6) newly recruited teachers and two (2) officials in the same university. The analysis of the results showed that the teachers reported improvement in both their English language skills and content knowledge after receiving the training course to use EMI. Yet, they faced challenges during the use of EMI and while receiving the in-service training on EMI. These challenges include inadequate language proficiency, limited resources and materials, limited guidance and support, time management issues, and resistance to change among teachers and students. On the basis of these findings, this inquiry suggests some pedagogical implications for trainers, policy makers and teachers to help them in the process of implementing EMI.
