Abstract

Abstract
This current aims to explore the role of reading short stories as a strategy to improve the
vocabulary acquisition of second year English students at the University of Mohamed Cherif
Messadiaa, Souk Ahars. It also seeks to identify the English teachers’ perceptions regarding
reading short stories as a strategy to help learners acquire new vocabularies. In pursuance of these
objectives, two research methods are used. First, an online questionnaire is administered to 55
students, and an interview is done with 4 randomly selected teachers from the same English
department. The findings reveal that reading short stories have a great impact on learners’
vocabulary acquisition. Besides, teachers have positive perceptions towards the use of this
strategy to expand students ‘vocabulary repertoire. Based on the confirmed hypotheses,
pedagogical recommendations are provided, emphasizing the integration of short story reading
into language teaching practices to enhance vocabulary learning outcomes.
