Abstract
Abstract
Proficiency in article usage is paramount in achieving clarity and precision in written productions, particularly for English learners. However, mastering English articles presents a formidable challenge due to linguistic disparities between learners\' first language and English, which significantly impacts students\' ability to accurately use articles in their writing. To address this issue, a study was conducted to investigate the influence of Arabic on the accurate use of articles in essay writing among third-year English students at the University of Mohamed Cherif Messaadia, Souk-Ahras. The research uses a descriptive, analytical design and employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches for data analysis. The study involved 30 randomly selected students and 12 teachers, who provided insights through tests and a questionnaire, respectively. Results confirmed that first language interference has a significant influence on article usage errors. Therefore, some pedagogical strategies are proposed by teachers, including raising awareness, highlighting language differences, practicing article usage, seeking feedback, and promoting extensive reading to mitigate the impact of first language interference. This study contributes to understanding the challenges English students face in article usage and provides practical solutions for educators to enhance students\' proficiency in this aspect of writing.
