Abstract
The rapid evolution of digital technologies and the Internet has significantly transformed education, making online learning (e-learning) indispensable in the modern educational landscape. This shift was particularly pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which compelled educational institutions to widely adopt distance learning. However, this transition has highlighted several challenges, including learner isolation, lack of interaction, and both technical and pedagogical difficulties that affect their motivation and performance.
This thesis addresses the main obstacles encountered in online learning, such as technical difficulties, pedagogical challenges, evaluation issues, and the lack of social interaction. It proposes the development of an intelligent online learning environment capable of adapting to the specific needs of learners by offering personalised assistance.
This work aims to provide innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency and quality of online learning by focusing on supporting learners through advanced technological tools. The first objective of this research is to propose an approach that offers intelligent assistance to learners encountering difficulties. To achieve this, we must analyse their interactions and detect the challenges they face. The goal is to provide multifaceted and personalized assistance to boost their engagement and motivation. The second objective is to integrate video annotations as a support tool for these struggling learners.The approach proposed in this work significantly enriches learning and transforms passive learning into a more dynamic experience.
To implement our proposals, we developed and tested an online learning environment adopting the proposed approach. The preliminary results are promising.
