Abstract

Exile and the passage from one’s place of origin to new spaces—within the framework of contemporary civilizational contexts—hold significant weight, giving rise to diverse narrative manifestations. This dissertation seeks to engage with these expressions through a close examination of a selection of Arabic novels, guided by a central question: How are spaces of exile represented in contemporary Arabic fiction?
The value of this study lies in its effort to conceptualize exile at the crossroads of various frameworks—philosophical, humanistic, social, and aesthetic—offering a multidimensional perspective. It also sheds light on crucial issues such as selfhood, identity, homeland, otherness, and the lingering effects of colonialism. Ultimately, the research reveals exile as a meaningful condition that plays a decisive role in the politics of representation, difference, and resistance within contemporary Arabic literature.
Keywords: Exile; Space; Arab Novel; Identity; Representation.
