Abstract

Abstract:

This study explores the bioecology of two nesting bird species, the Eurasian collared dove and the wood, in agro-ecosystems of north eastern Algeria (Guelma region). By analyzing the relationships between nesting parameters (branch diameter, distance from the trunk, nest depth, and indicators of reproductive success (e.g., hatching, nest departure), we reveal contrasting strategies. The more specialized wood dove relies heavily on orange groves for reproduction, while the more generalist collared dove is adapted to both traditional and intensive olive groves. Anthropogenic pressures, such as orchard conversion and pesticides, pose a threat to both species, with forests being more sensitive. Our findings call for agro ecological management that preserves old-growth trees and minimizes disturbances during dove nesting to preserve these key biomarkers of Mediterranean ecosystems.
