Abstract
A seasonal study was carried out on monogenean ectoparasites collected from
the fish species Cyprinus carpio (Cyprinidae) caught in the Foum El-Khanga reservoir
in Souk Ahras (Algeria) during 2014. A total of 120 fish (30 individuals per season) was
examined, producing 193 individual parasites of the subclass Monopisthocotylea. Based
on morpho-anatomical criteria, five species of Monogenea were identified, belonging to
the genera Dactylogyrus (D. extensus, D. anchoratus, D. arcuatus and D. cyclocirrus)
and Pseudacolpenteron (P. pavlovskii). Three of the species are new to the Algerian
parasite fauna. The distribution of the calculated epidemiological index shows that infection
rates and parasite loads by Monogenea are different over the course of the year. The species
D. extensus showed the highest prevalences in spring (P = 53.33%) and summer (P =
60%), whereas D. cyclocirrus (P = 50%) and P. pavlovskii (P = 40%) are mainly present
in autumn. D. anchoratus and D. arcuatus showed lower prevalence in winter (P = 3.33%).
Statistical analysis confirms the influence of microhabitat (arcs within each
gill), season and size of the host on the overall rate of infestation.
Keywords: Monogenean parasites, Cyprinus carpio, Foum El-Khanga reservoir,
Parasitism, Season.
