The University of Souk-Ahras was founded in 1998 as an annex attached to the University of Annaba offering only of three courses namely:

  • Law and Management.
  • Information Technology.
  • Core Curriculum for Exact Sciences, Computer Science and Technology.

There was a steady boom since the moment it was as an annex with only 270 students and 05 lecturers, including 03 external lecturers from the University of Annaba. The major concern at that time was to seek to promote it as a University Centre. This was done according to the Ministerial Decree No. 01/279 of 18 December 2001.

From that moment, the University Centre of Souk-Ahras had a new ambitious start within all fields in a record time where over 20 courses were being taught. Furthermore, there was an observed progress and improvement for the level of teaching quality as well as research activities which seen through organizing various conferences and symposiums.

During this period, 1,418 students were enrolled under the supervision of 91 teaching staff between permanent and associates. In 17 June 2010, the Minister of Mujahideen ( War Veteran ) had the honour to name the University Center after the deceased “Mohamed Cherif Messaadia” on the instruction of His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The administration of the university centre had worked eagerly with all means at its disposal for the better management as well as tracking of various operations and activities. The Centre had further benefited from modern infrastructure and equipments with the goal to bring its institution to the rank of major universities. During the period from 2001 to 2010, the university center evolved rapidly to host over 8,000 students as follows:

  • 2000 new seats between 2004 and 2005.
  • 1500 new seats between 2006 and 2007.
  • 4500 new seats between 2009 and 2010.

Such achievements have assisted the university centre to devote all the necessary means and tools for the perfection and improvement of academic activities.

In December 10, 2011, His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has officially announced to promote the centre to become as the University of Souk-Ahras, in an executive decree number 12-245 of 4 June 2012 (14 Rajeb 1433).
