Abstract
-
Our work has focused on the study of the physicochemical water quality of boreholes used for
the production of drinking water in Tebessa. For this reason, four wells were chosen as the most
representative of the groundwaters at four sites in the province.
The samples were analyzed at the regional laboratory of the National Water Resources Agency located
in Constantine. The analysis covered the following physicochemical parameters:
Temperature, turbidity, water acidity, electrical conductivity, dry residue, total hardness, full title alkalinity,
and the cations witch are: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and the anions witch are bicarbonates,
sulfates and chlorides. In addition, some undesirable elements (phosphates, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate),
and a number of heavy metals (iron, zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic).
The results of analyzes of samples is shown that the waters of the four points studied had the same
chemical profile "calcium sulfate". The graphs obtained during the comparison of these results with the
software "Charts", used by hydrogeologists, show that water samples are been in the same hydrochemical
family. In particular we remarked the symmetry of two boreholes witch are M4 (El Ma El Abiod) and CH2
(Cheria), the same thing for P5 (Tebessa) and EF1 (Hammamet).
The comparison analyzes with drinking water standards shows that all water is hard. P5 drilling
(Tebessa) is considered as the most mineralized point; it exceeds the standards (Algerian and WHO) for
nitrates, sulfates and calcium. The other elements are acceptable. Water drilling EF1 and CH2 are acceptable
with a critical dosage for nitrates. The M4 water drilling has acceptable standards settings, and it is also the
lightest (less hard) water studied.
The Evaluation of the Quality of groundwater System (EQS) was used to classify the waters of four
boreholes - depending on the quality and suitability for the production of drinking water- to three classes;
-Water drilling M4 is good,
-Water drilling CH2 is of poor quality but can be improved by treatment,
- Water drilling EF1 and P5 are reported poor quality (not drinking water), especially the P5 drilling seems
difficult to treat. (It would be better to change it to function).
The marked differences on one side due to the nature of the subsurface environment of ground
traversed by the water, on the other hand, the contamination from human activities specific of Tebessa
region (agriculture and livestock).
This study was completed by a microbiological study to determine the origin of the excess nitrates and
confirm or probable bacterial contamination. The analyzes were performed for three of the four water points
studied (the fourth has been removed by the competent authorities).
