Abstract

In General, designers consider the flow in wastewater collection system as steady and uniform, which favors and justify the use of manning's formula. The later has been, for long, a subject of particular interest to researchers, who expressed it in terms of graphs and tables for simplicity and practical reasons. However, several researchers expressed their concern regarding potential errors associated with the use of these simple methods.
This research work propose, through a simple and direct approach, a better solution than existing methods. Three approaches were proposed. The first one is semi-graphic where simple equations along with a graph were proposed. In the second one a novel design approach based on the volumetric and circulation efficiency of the flow to better exploit the pipe and ameliorate its efficiency was proposed. Finally, we present a novel analytic approach based on the referencing to a conduit with known flow characteristics.
The results of the proposed approaches, along with those of existing methods were compared to the Manning formula results. The proposed approaches are simpler, more direct, and produce better results.
