Abstract

Some reproductive and productive traits of the one humped dromedary camel in Southeastern Algeria were studied. A total of 36 households were interviewed using a single-visit-multiple-subjects diagnostic survey. Most of the camel herders were keeping animals belonging to the Sahraoui population (91.66%). The sale of animals (30.6%) was the major income sources for camel herders. 47.2% of them kept their animals in nomadic system and 36.1% practiced food supplementation. The survey on reproductive traits indicated that camels conceived and calved during the same season with high incidence between December-January and the postpartum oestrus was 7.80±4.95 months. Age (months) at first rut, first oestrus, first mating of the males and females where, respectively, 37.08±16.2, 27.36±11.52, 50.28±22.44 and 30.72±10.92. Age (months) at the first calving, gestation length and calving interval were 45.72±14.40, 12.19±0.30 and 22.92±8.16, respectively. Calves were weaned at 8.08±3.61 months, milk yields per day (liters) at beginning, middle and end of lactation, during a milking period of: 330±74.1 days, were 4.75±1.72, 2.91±1.15 and 1.36±1.10, respectively. The milk yield peak was attended at 10.19±2.36 years. Males and females were retained for reproduction on average 15.75±3.41 and 23.31±5.64 years respectively. The number of calves per age was 9.38±2.50.
